Whats the point of your warranty???

I purchased my cellphone in June 2015, to my knwoledge vodacom offers a two year warranty. So when my phone has a fault in March 2017 I expected my warranty to still be valid. When I sent my phone in for repairs as it just switched off and would not charge I was then given a quote of +- R2300 for a phone I purchased for R2500, and was told that because there is a crack on the screen the warranty no longer is valid. I do not understand that as the screen was not the problem but the battery or the charging pin as that is the reason I sent my phone in. Im just really confused as to how the warranty works as I cannot see myself paying for a repair which comes to almost the same price as the purchase of the phone. As far as I know software issues fall under warranty but not physical damages. I did not want or expect them to fix the crack only the issue of my phone not being able to switch on.
