Wait 6 months to sign new contract??

I am currently moving to month-to-month on my current contract while waiting for the iphone 6s deals to come out to take on a new contract.

Apparently after consulting an agent, if I want to sign a contract deal where it says "new contract only", I have to wait 6 months on prepaid first? this is quite ridiculous because I can then port my number to a new provider and sign a contract within 30 days.

I am not sure why Vodacom would be willing to lose customers like this?

I am writing this post because I don't believe that this is a real policy (because it is ridiculous and outrageous) so I do need clarification on this before I say farewell to Vodacom. Vodacom's response to this and resolution will determine whether they retain me as a customer.
