On Saturday 7 January I returned home from my holiday and wanted to reset my voice mail so that people can leave messages.

Easy, right?

WRONG!

Here is what has happened:

SATURDAY 7 JANUARY :

At about 3.30pm I called Vodacom customer care (probably a misnomer) to report a problem with resetting my voice mail. After calling in 4 times, with each call lasting probably 10 minutes, my call was continually dropped when the operator tried to transfer me to the "techncal" department. Each time I would call back and have to repeat my problem( As well as go through the 6 or so security questions required to verify my authenticity. Oh, and also have to do the ridiculous "Voice Identity" at the beginning of each call, which is supposed to then do away with the questions, but actually doesn't. It just wastes your time).

One hour and ten minutes later I manged to get through to a "Technical" adviser who told me she could not help me and the technical division only worked week days. She advised that she would log my call and I would be contacted within 48 hours( based on working days), so the latest I should expect a call back would be on Tuesday 10 January. I was given a reference number by customer care operater ,Nokuthla, and the time was now 4.37pm.

WEDNESDAY 11 JANUARY:

So after waiting very patiently and not hearing a word from Vodacom I decided to call again and enquire why I had not been contacted. You know what happened?

I won't bore you with the details but after an hour and fifteen minutes of dropped calls, inarticulate operators, I was ultimately told, "Sorry, we see we haven't got around to your logged problem yet. Please be patient". And before I could question this answer I was cut off.

Patient I have been, now what?

Does anyone have any advice? I don't think I am being unreasonable to expect some kind of solution to my problem. It has been almost 5 days since I started this process.

Vodacom has to be the most pathetic company in South Africa. I cannot believe that their management is not aware of this "Customer Care" problem. It has been like this for years and I have actually been very patient and never gone public with my disatisfaction. However, this time I think it has gone too far.

My Suggestion:

The senior magement should all be fired and made to reapply for their jobs and rehired based on their answer to one queston,

" What will you do to fix our serious customer care problem ?".
