Vodacom's Response to 25 Years of Loyalty: "Come Back in 2028"

Reference: ***

I have been a loyal Vodacom customer for more than 25 years, and have maintained multiple contracts with the company throughout that time. My accounts have always been in good standing, and I have never defaulted on a payment.

Recently my circumstances changed significantly. I am no longer employed and no longer receiving an income. As a responsible customer, I contacted Vodacom to discuss options for reducing the monthly costs across my various contracts so that I could continue meeting my obligations and keep my account in good standing.

What followed was extremely disappointing.

I was transferred from one agent to another, with each advising that they could not assist. Finally, I was connected to a Retentions agent—Zama Khanyile , who informed me that because I am not due for an upgrade, no migration, downgrade, price reduction, or other adjustment could be made to any of my contracts. Despite clearly explaining my financial situation, I was repeatedly told that Vodacom could not accommodate any changes until I became eligible for upgrades, which would only be in 2028.

I find this response both shocking and deeply disappointing.

After more than two decades of loyalty, multiple contracts, and a perfect payment history, I expected Vodacom to at least explore available options to assist a customer who is experiencing unforeseen financial hardship. Instead, I was met with a blanket refusal to assist, no apparent willingness to investigate alternatives that could help retain a long-standing customer, and told to continue paying the current amount until 2028.

In an economic climate where many South Africans are facing financial challenges, one would expect a company of Vodacom's size and reputation to have some form of hardship assistance, retention support, or downgrade solution available for long-standing customers.

What is most concerning is that I am not attempting to avoid my obligations. On the contrary, I am proactively engaging with Vodacom to find a sustainable solution that would allow me to continue honouring my commitments during a difficult period. Rather than supporting that effort, Vodacom's position appears to be that nothing can be done.

Sadly, this experience has left me questioning whether customer loyalty has any value at Vodacom.

If a customer who has supported Vodacom for more than 25 years, maintained multiple contracts, and consistently paid their accounts cannot receive assistance when facing genuine financial hardship, then Vodacom's commitment to customer care is questionable.

Vodacom, are you really saying that after 25 years of loyal support and a flawless payment record, there is absolutely nothing you can do to help a customer keep multiple accounts affordable during a period of financial hardship?

If this is how a good standing customer of more than 25 years is treated, it is difficult to see why anyone should remain loyal to the brand.

I am therefore asking Vodacom's Customer Retentions or Executive Escalations Team to urgently review my account and engage with me regarding available options to reduce the costs of my existing contracts. I believe there must be more customer-centric solutions than simply telling a loyal customer to wait until 2028.

I hope Vodacom will use this opportunity to demonstrate that loyalty and responsible account management still matter.
