Vodacom’s Predatory Hidden Fees

I ported from MTN to Vodacom on 26/08/2026, signing a 24-month contract. I spent weeks visiting stores and speaking with consultants to ensure I chose the right plan.

At no point, verbally by consultants, on my signed quotation, in my final contract, or in the official terms and conditions, was it ever disclosed that Caller Line Identification Presentation (CLIP) is an extra, paid add-on. My contract explicitly states "VAS charges: R0".

Because Vodacom locks this baseline feature behind a paywall for contract users, every single contact saved on my device now appears as "No Caller ID" or "Unknown Caller" when they phone me. According to Vodacom's own definitions, Value-Added Services (VAS) are "non-core services... which enable you to go beyond standard voice calls."

How on earth does seeing the phone number of a contact I already own constitute a luxury feature that "goes beyond" a standard call? This is a baseline network function. To prove the hypocrisy, Vodacom provides this feature completely free of charge to prepaid users.

This is predatory corporate behavior for three reasons: 1. Exploiting Safety: In an era of rampant spam, phishing, and telemarketing, knowing who is calling is a basic security and privacy control. It is not a luxury.

2. Omission of Costs: Intentionally hiding an ongoing fee by omitting it from marketing material, fine print, and signed contract layouts is a highly questionable business practice. It deliberately denies consumers the ability to make an informed financial choice.

3. Trapping Contract Users: Vodacom selectively forces this fee onto contract users because they know we are legally locked in for 24 months and cannot easily leave without facing massive cancellation penalties.

Potential Vodacom customers need to be aware of these hidden costs before signing any agreements. I will be escalating this matter directly to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombudsman (CGSO) as a formal billing dispute.
