Vodacom / WASP has a sting

Being a pensioner, I am very careful with my airtime usage, receiving about R350 per month on contract. I was shocked to see my airtime draining rapidly away. Suspecting “airtime theft” I waited for my itemised billing and then investigated. To my horror I saw that I was being billed R20 PER DAY for “Online Content”. It had gone on for 55 days. R1100.00 of my hard-saved airtime. It was taking R600 per month – I only get R350, so it was well on its way to cleaning out my airtime.

I went to Vodacom and was told that I had “clicked on a link and subscribed to on-line gaming” (something about WASP was mentioned). I would never knowingly do this.

Vodacom are taking my money each month and paying it to the rip-off artists involved but according to the person I spoke to “are powerless to stop this from happening.” All they can do is to deregister my subscription. As for a refund – forget it.

After I was deregistered, I received two SMSs telling me that I was no longer subscribed.

If Vodacom are aware of the situation, are powerless to stop it from happening and can unsubscribe me so quickly, then why can’t they at least SMS me to tell me that I am subscribed to the service?

They tell me TWICE that I am not registered but are strangely silent when I unknowingly BECOME subscribed.

I am convinced that Vodacom are involved in this **** and in fact are getting a cut. Hence their willingness to take R20 per day and give it to another company without bothering to check with me if I am aware what is happening or even notify me that they are doing it.
