Vodacom requesting Card Pin
I received a promotional sms on 28/11/2018:
Recharge securely at any time with your debit or credit card. Get 1GB back on your first Vodacom Express Recharge of R29 or more. Valid for today. Dial *135*02#. Opt Out? SMS STOP to 31118.
I followed instructions as per the prompts and was requested to enter my debit card number, expiry date, CVV and then finally the PIN OF THE CARD. Since we all know that banks advise us never to disclose your card pin to anyone, I did not proceed and contacted customer care to find out why this information was requested and warm them of a possible phishing ****. A consultant then confirmed that the details are requested, and when prompted, she informed me that she cannot guarantee that my information will not been obtained by anyone else. This is extremely alarming since Vodacom is putting their clients at risk by requesting this information, especially since banks carry no responsibility for any ***** in the event that the pin has been made public. Furthermore there is no reasonable explanation why the pin number is requested - no legitimate online shopping company requires a pin. The feedback received from customer care of "That is how the system works" is not at all acceptable.
Thank you for making us aware of your complaint. Kindly be advised that a consultant will make contact with you in due course to assist with your query. ***Please note*** Beware of phishing ****s. Vodacom will not contact you via Whatsapp to request your personal details Regards, Vodacom Consumer Website Team
