Vodacom Put Me on a Contract Without My Consent

I have been a loyal Vodacom customer for over 3 years. My contract started on 17/11/2022 and I was paying R303 per month. In 2025 my monthly fee suddenly increased to R1048.

When I called Vodacom to query the increase, I was told that my contract had ended and that I was now on a month-to-month arrangement, which is why the price increased. I questioned why this change was made without any communication. I then asked to cancel the service since I was supposedly on month-to-month, but I was told I would need to pay cancellation fees, which made no sense.

During that call I was persuaded to stay and take what was clearly explained to me as a month-to-month SIM deal, with the assurance that I could cancel at any time without cancellation penalties. I agreed specifically because I made it very clear that I do not want contracts and I do not want to be tied into long-term agreements.

Now when I call to cancel, I am being told that I have a contract until 2027.

How is this possible when I explicitly stated that I did not want a contract and only agreed to a month-to-month option so that I could cancel whenever I wanted?

What is even more confusing is that I am now told I can upgrade the contract but I cannot cancel it. This makes absolutely no sense. It feels like the rules change depending on what benefits Vodacom — when it suits them the contract is flexible, but when it suits the customer it suddenly becomes binding.

This situation is extremely frustrating and feels misleading. I would like Vodacom to review the call records where I clearly stated that I did not want to enter into a contract and that the agreement was meant to be month-to-month with the ability to cancel at any time.

I would appreciate Vodacom correcting this issue and allowing the cancellation without penalties.
