Vodacom only interested in the sale, not the customer

I upgraded my business contract (cellphone) on 22 January 2025. I selected a brand of phone we have used before, but not since the change in their operating system. I was assured that it operates on Android software and that all apps available through Google Play will work. However, when it came to connecting the phone to my vehicle via Android Auto it did not work. This is vital and non-negotiable for me as I am vision impaired (legally blind in one eye) and rely on the vehicle screen to operate my phone and drive safely.

I contacted Vodacom directly and they assured me that I have 7 days to return the handset if I am unhappy, but as I went through a physical store, I must raise the issue with the store - which I did, requesting that the phone be exchanged for a different brand.

The store insisted that on OBF / In-store failure be conducted. So the phone was sent off for testing and was returned on 6 February 2025. Unsurprisingly, it was found that there were no issues with the phone and Vodacom would not replace the phone as this is their company policy - and they cannot go against company policy.

What I have learnt from this experience: 1. The Consumer Protection Act does not cover you in all instances. While it does say that if you purchase an item without being able to test it's workings, and it doesn't work as you require it to, it is eligible for return/exchange/refund - it's not a given. 2. If you purchase from a Vodashop you have zero protection. The 7-day return is only valid for online purchases. 3. In the event of an OBF being successful, they will swop the phone for the same make and model - so they really wasted my time as it was already ascertained that the software was not compatible with my vehicle... 4. Our business contract has been with Vodacom since cellphones first became available on the market - there is no value in loyalty in business. 5. When you upgrade your phone and you have specific requirements such as phone connectivity to your vehicle for example, please ask the Rep or Area Manager for that brand to demonstrate that that model can do what you require it to do. I have not mentioned the brand of phone as they were the only ones trying really hard to find a solution for me - and they are still trying.
