Vodacom keeps on debiting money over a cancelled contract to settle Makate matter
I had a Moderm contract with Vodacom which was entered into sometime in 2022 if my memory serves me well. It was a 24 month contract for data on two mordems, it lapsed sometime this year and Vodacom automatically renewed and updated the terms with higher prices. Upon seeing this I called them to try and terminate the contract on the 4th of September, over the phone I explicitly explained to the consultant that I wanted to terminate the contract for both modems but she was trying to convince me to only terminate the contract for only one.
I have a recording of this phone call and intend to use it when I report them to the Ombudsman. I was resolute and insisted that both contracts be terminated, we went back and forth for a few minutes but in the end I was assured that my intention to terminate both contracts had been recorded and that I would receive a text message and email to that effect.
To my surprise, I only received an email for only one contract termination, I then called once again and spoke to a different consultant who then told me that there was only one contract termination recorded. I then explained to her my displeasure with the revelation and told her that I have a recording of how the call went. I was then transferred to the consultant who had initially helped me who then told me that she had “misunderstood me”
The following day I received a phone call from a consultant from Vodacom apologising “profusely” for the misunderstanding as he called it and said that the matter had been “escalated”. But that their records had been updated.
It’s my understanding that since my contract with Vodacom had lapsed they were supposed to cancel the contract with no further charges as there were no punitive costs at least according to the Consumer Protection Act.
Now imagine my surprise when Vodacom decided to debit some money from my account after 30 days since the termination of the contract just so they can settle their Makate matter by *****ulently *****ing from unsuspecting customers.
I then called them to complain and was told to sent an email as they’ll refund me after 7 working days. When I emailed them I was told they’re still “investigating” 30 days later Vodacom is still investigating.
Please be on the look out for those unexplained deductions from Vodacom on your bank statements, they’re trying to settle their Makate matter using our hard earned money! Shame on Vodacom
