Vodacom is *****ing my money
I've been a Vodacom customer for +-15 years. Recently I was in a 3 hour meeting with a client. After the meeting I noticed a number of SMSes had come through, progressively indicating I had used up my data bundle and then some 2.5GB of data. All this over a 15 minute period while not using my phone. Furthermore, post the meeting, my internet did not work. I ended up not having internet access on my phone for 1 week, despite various calls to Vodacom, including going to a Vodacom store per their instructions. After demanding to speak to a manager not a call centre agent, it was eventually identified that I have a cap on my data usage. While I am glad for this as who knows what my "usage" would have without it, it is mind boggling to me that it took a week and umpteen phone calls to Vodacom to identify the source of the problem. This is not even my complaint. My complaint is that, nearly a month later, after an "investigation", I have received a letter from Vodacom, from a "do not reply" email address, informing me that "after a thorough investigation" "the data was indeed used" and "the billed amounts [+-R3000] are true and correct" but that because I am such a "valued client" I am getting a "gesture of goodwill" to "credit my account with R1637.08 including VAT". This comes complete with a condescending list of suggestions including that I must turn off my mobile phone data and only use wi fi. EXCUSE ME? What is the POINT of having data bundles if I must leave my mobile data off and NOT use it? Furthermore, under what circumstances does one use 1GB of data plus a further R3000 of data (another how many GB?) in 15 minutes? My 50MB fibre connection at my house couldn't even get internet speeds high enough to use all this data in 15 minutes, let alone my cell phone. It would be apparent, if investigating my account, that even if it is physically possible to use this amount of data in this period of time (and I contest that it is) that I consistently use data over the course of the month and have never used so much data in such a short period of time. In other words, a review of my online behaviour with my cellphone reveals a very clear anomaly. This anomaly is in line with either an error from Vodacom's side, or else a case of some kind of hacking. Why is the user responsible for hacking? Where in our contracts does it say this? Isn't the phone service provider, with its huge networks and its even huger profits, responsible for protections against hacking like banks accept with ***** on bank accounts and credit cards? Unless it is just a blatant money-making **** from Vodacom, leveraging off ridiculously high per MB data charges out of bundle. Not to mention, having discussed this with my business partner, the EXACT same thing happened to her a few days before me. Vodacom, I reject your goodwill offer of R1637.08 including VAT. Either refund me the ENTIRE amount I have been charged, and replace my lost 1GB data for free, or I will progress as follows: 1. I will get my company's legal firm involved. I run my own business, can afford legal fees where necessary and will do this on principle. 2. I will be taking this matter further with ICASA. The cost of data in this country is appalling compared to other African countries, just for starters, but more importantly, the exploitation of the average powerless citizen is disgusting and I'm not going to sit by and have R3000 of mine ****** by a company that already makes billions in profits.
