Vodacom is demanding full contract subscription for a contract that they cancelled

I have been a loyal Vodacom contract customer since 2009. I ran into financial problems post-COVID in 2023 and could not service my contract. Vodacom cancelled the contract on August 28, 2023 and disconnected the service. I even pleaded with their customer service division to convert the number to prepaid and they could not assist. I lost my main means of communication the cellphone number that I had used for over 10 years. I had to find an alternative number.

I am now receiving letters from lawyers (HP attorneys) demanding that I pay the contract in full despite the fact that Vodacom discontinued the service. Here is a breakdown of the Demand

Vodacom account number: ************x Capital outstanding: R 5 422.52 Balance of subscription: R 7 123.83 Hardware balance: R 0.00 Total amount due: R 12 546.35

I agree with the capital balance of R5,422.52, which is reflected on the customer statement and invoice. I contend that Vodacom, through their Attoneys, (HP Attoneys), is demanding an amount of R7 123.83, which is reflected as the balance of the subscription when they discontinued the service. The device portion of the contract is paid up according to their records. This is similar to kicking someone out of a leased apartment and then demanding that they pay off the lease. I am wondering if it is fair, moral, legal, and ethical to demand that someone pay off the balance of the subscription for a service that will not be provided. Please take into consideration that I have been a loyal and paying customer since 2009 until lately, when my finances have not been in a good position.

To add salt to injury Vodacom listed me on credit bureaus as being in default when I have been paying the debt
