Vodacom does not care about PRIVACY - BEWARE

I used to have a work cellphone on a Vodacom contract, which I had to register on Vodacom 4 Me to be able to manage the data useage.

When I changed jobs I had to return the phone and couldn't keep the number.

My name and email address is however still linked to the number on Vodacom 4 Me. Recently I started receiving emails informing me of data bundles bought for the number. I must assume the number has in the meantime been re-allocated to another Vodacom customer.

I have tried to deregister the account as I do not want to get another person's information as this is private. However every time I try to deregister (I have tried quite a number of times) I get informed by the Vodacom site that there is a "technical error" preventing me from deregistering. I am starting to think this is just a ploy by Vodacom to prevent someone deregistering on "Vodacom 4 Me".

I the meantime I have full access to this other person's account as it is still using my Login details and as such I can actually, should I wish to, make changes to the account and I keep on getting updates on their billing information.

In any event I have also addressed the matter with Vodacom via their technical department who also refuse to assist me as the phone was a work phone.

I have explained to them that this is my personal information and I want the account deregistered or in the alternative my personal information deleted from this "Vodacom 4 Me" account but they have not responded.

Unfortunately the POPI Act is not in effect yet, or else I would have reported Vodacom to the regulator. However I am now considering approaching the relevant regulator to the Telecommunications Industry should this matter not be resolved.

On their own website Vodacom informs its clients that it is "committed" to securing their private information.

This is not what I experienced and I wonder how many other users who have had numbers reallocated to them from previous users are unknowingly sharing their private billing information, and giving access to their accounts to strangers unwittingly due to this glaring privacy breach on Vodacom's system?

BEWARE other Vodacom users, you may also be at risk!
