Vodacom: Deliberate misselling & misrepresentation

Misselling: the deliberate, reckless, or negligent sale of products or services in circumstances where the contract is either misrepresented, or the product or service is unsuitable for the customer's needs

The above is exactly my recent experience with Vodacom. I was recently sold a new data contract by Vodacom that is of no use to me and now Vodacom does not want to let me cancel the contract. It was proposed to me as a better data contract based on an analysis of my current usage on my mobile phone and supposedly to save me money. I was told to remember to cancel my current data subscription on my mobile contract which I did. A mobile data-router was sort-of "thrown in" as an apparent freebie, but this router is actually quite critical to this new "better"arrangement.

The data and the router goes hand in hand i.e. you have to charge and carry the router with you and connect your mobile phone via WiFi to be able to use the data - so the new proposed data contract really does not replace what you use on your mobile. It is a completely seperate thing which you happen to be able to connect your mobile phone to. I don't know many people who use (or would even want to use) their mobile phones in this way.

This is completely ridiculous and I can't believe that Vodacom chooses to rather make me as a client very upset with them and highly likely to move my mobile contract to a competitor at the first chance I get. I'll be happy to give them back there little router "freebie" as I have no use for it and am not going to use any of this new data contract that they signed me up for.

Don't be fooled (as I was) by this supossedly great alternative and way to save you money. Data cost wise it will only save you a few rand in any case...if you are willing to have to carry a WiFi router with you to connect to...and use it for a while until the battery dies in any case.

I understand that you sales agents have sales targets, but this leads them to leave out quite important little practical facts and misrepresent in order to make sales. I people know how this really works not many people will sign-up, I'm quite sure about that.

Nice job Vodacom...I was actually quite happy with you up until now.

Werner du Preez

**********
