Vodacom contract downgrade to prepaid cancels your number

A totally useless SA company... I called in to downgrade my contract to prepaid. after speaking to a consultant, he said if i cancel my contract my number would be removed from the system, I said i wanted to retain my number. he ignored me speaking to him and hung up. i cant use phone now...
