Vodacom automatically extends two year contract for another two years after contract expiry
I would like to lodge a complaint against Vodacom for unfair treatment of my father with regards to his cellphone contract. My father, Gideon Slabbert snr signed for a cellphone contract in 2013 with Vodacom. He received a cellphone and paid all his monthly fees via debit order. When the contract expired in 2015 he received a phone call from Vodacom asking if he would like to extend the contract by asking if he wanted a new phone. My dad said no, he does not want a new phone. Without my dad realizing it Vodacom then signed him up for another two year contract. We phoned Vodacom yesterday 05-05-2016 and tried to cancel the contract. According to the contract rules - as stated on Vodacom's website - my dad should of been placed on a monthly contract in stead of signing him up for another two year contract. He did not even receive a new phone so there is no way that Vodacom could of interpreted that my dad still wanted another two year contract. My dad is also now on pension and he does not have the financial means to keep on paying for this contract. Vodacom disputed this fact but acknowledged that my dad does not want the contract anymore, we then received an email from Vodacom stating that my dad can cancel the contract if he pays a cancellation fee of R1454.99. The contract he currently has is for R343 per month so this is a huge penalty, also considering the fact that he is on pension and that he had no intention of signed another two year contract. My dad does not have the financial means to fight this unfair treatment from Vodacom. Also when I tried phoning Vodacom again today 06-05-2016 they cut me off in the middle of the call after I stated my case, so I do not feel like they are giving us a fair opportunity to dispute this issue.
