Utter Incompetence or is it an elaborate shakedown?

I took out a contract with Vodacom at the end of February 2025. Within a month, after the cooling off period, I realised that this arrangement would not work for me so I opted to cancel.

I was told that I need to pay a cancellation fee and that I will be debited for the month of April as I had cancelled late. This was fine with me, after all I was making the cancellation on the 29th of March 2025. I paid the cancellation fee and I was told to phone Vodacom on 1st and 2nd of April to ensure that there is no billing issue.

Just to be sure I called on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of April 2025 to ensure that the contract was cancelled. By this point I was debited for the month of April as mentioned and I received a confirmation email that the account had been cancelled. I check on the vodacom app and the number has changed from contract to pre-paid. So seemingly all should be good, right?

No, I receive an email a few days later saying that I owe an extra R1400. Quite clearly I do not owe Vodacom a cent extra as I had followed THEIR demands to the letter.

I have called numerous times since this date and seemingly nobody knows what to do at Vodacom anywhere. Every call gets escalated but I am transferred from one clueless agent to another. All the while I am still being told that I will be billed for no apparent reason.

Which leads me to believe that perhaps this whole cancellation of contracts is meant to be as convoluted as possible soon as to siphon extra money out of unfortunate customers.

Maybe it is too much to ask of one of the biggest Telecoms companies on the continent to deliver a service ever so slightly above mediocrity.

Pathetic.

Frankly your service around this has been appalling.

I got 2 follow up calls from Vodacom yesterday around this issue.

First I get confirmation that I have followed the stipulated procedure to the letter. I have made every payment that I was asked to do, called when asked, email when asked.

My reward for this is a R1200.00 bill due to an admin error. An utter joke. I have now been contacted by several agents in additions to the follow ups in person and on the phone.

One of the largest telcoms companies on the continent with an archaic cancellation procedure. Who knows maybe it is done deliberately, perhaps the extra money siphoned off of unsuspecting customers is how Vodacom delivers shareholder value.
