Unfair cancellation policy for sim-only contracts

I'm shocked that Vodacom can still get away with unfair cancellation policies.

The policy is this: If you wanted to cancel your contract before the 24 month period, you have to pay the full monthly fee x 75% x the remaining months.

I can understand this for contracts where the user is essentially paying off a handset. But for a sim-only deal you are not paying anything off. Vodacom is simply charging you for 75% of the remaining months without you having used any minutes or data.

What makes this even more unreal is that I wasn't even planning to cancel - I was planning to get a contract including a handset, in other words, upgrade from where I am now. Now I have to pay a cancellation fee in order to do that?

If you are wondering what the main competitors do: Cell C, Telkom and MTN only charge the device subsidy x months remaining. Vodacom could learn a thing or two from them.
