The fibre optic infrastructure in my complex was sold by Evotel to Vodacom. The residents were offered a deal whereby if they migrated to Vodacom by the end of August, there would be minimal disruption in the internet services, as Evotel would disconnect services at the end of September. For some unknown reason, Vodacom required that their own router be installed, even though they were to use the same fibre infrastructure. Having experienced Vodacom's level of customer service before, I was highly reluctant to migrate to them. Unfortunately, the complex did not have an open access network at the time, and so against my better judgement I opted for the migration on the 31st of August.
I only received a confirmation of this two weeks later on the 15th of September. A further two weeks later on the 29th of September, with the Evotel cut-off looming, I called them to request that installation of their router take place as soon as possible. The call centre consultant (whose name I unfortunately didn't get) kept me on hold for a total of 22 minutes. He told me that he had sent an 'urgent email' to the installation team and I was assured that I would receive a phone call within the next two days. I never did.
In the intervening time, another service provider was able lay a completely new fibre line through the complex in parallel with the Vodacom line in order to provide an open access network. Given the complete lack of basic and adequate service from Vodacom, I decided to cancel the migration, having received no equipment or services.
Chapter two of the saga begins. Here's a time line of my communication with them so far; -21st of October: Under the advi*****t of the call centre, I sent an email requesting cancellation to their fibre centre and received a service request number. -27th of October: As I'd heard nothing, I called the call centre to confirm cancellation. I was advised that it would be escalated and they would contact me shortly. I received no call back. -28th of October: I spoke to Elizabeth Esau at the call centre who advised me that it would again be sent to the 'back office'. -1st, 2nd and 3rd of November: I sent follow up emails to the addresses that Elizabeth had forwarded my request to, with no response. -3rd of November: I spoke to Elizabeth once again who advised me that her colleague in the 'back office', Anschen would address my cancellation request. -8th of November: Having heard nothing, I phoned the call centre again that morning and spoke to Sophie Nini, who advised me that this was a 'sales' problem, not a 'support' problem, and could only offer to 'send a follow up' to sales. She refused to let me speak to any managers and promised that I would hear from them that day. Having heard nothing from Sophie by that afternoon, I decided to call 'sales' where I spoke to Valerie. She took my details and sounded quite surprised that a simple cancellation had taken so long. She processed another cancellation for me hoping to speed things up.
Three weeks have now gone by and I have made 8 phone calls, spoken to 4 consultants and sent 6 emails to Vodacom since the cancellation request. Whoever is supposed to be responsible for doing this straight forward task has clearly done nothing about it, despite my repeated attempts. None of the consultants would give me the contact details for, or let me speak to, someone more senior, as it is apparently 'against policy'. If this is actually true, it is not surprising that basic tasks cannot be completed, as the public cannot hold anyone there accountable to their managers for not doing a job.
I am now out of options and I refuse to waste my personal and professional time chasing up people who will not do a basic job. I just want a simple confirmation that my migration has been cancelled. If anybody has the contact details for someone senior at Vodacom, I would appreciate it if you could leave them in the comments below. My next calls will be to the Vodacom head offices.
