Unable to cancel a new contract withing the allowed 14 day cancellation period.

I had a contract that had expired, was on a month to month, and was up for renewal. When I called the Vodacom Cancellations line (***) a week ago to change the number to a pay as you go I was encouraged to do an upgrade to a R79 data only package for 24 months. After accepting the contract and being informed that I had 14 days to change my mind, I had a change of mind and phoned back the following day to cancel. After spending 30 minutes on the phone with a consultant I was assured the cancellation was being processed, the number would revert to month to month, and it would take 5 working days to be processed. I followed up today (5 days later) to find out the status of my cancellation and was told that no cancellation was received. I was routed to a new department (***) and went through the entire process again. Now I am told the cancellation will only be effective from the end of August. It seems that the Vodacom cancellations department is really about retentions, if you actually want to cancel they are not interested and give you the run-around. So now I have to wait a month to see if the cancellation has actually been processed.
