Third-party (Telkom) Outgoing Email User Left Stranded!

Since mid May 2021 Vodacom internet customers using third-party Outgoing Email have been left stranded. Despite repeat attempts, Vodacom Call Centre Agents cannot resolve the issue. Own research reveals the functional 'disconnect' is likey due to Vodacom allegedly electing to change their authentication / security credential criteria on Outgoing Email as the likely cause.

Whilst Vodacom is obviously entitled to do as it pleases, the dissapointment lies in loss of functionality without the courtesy of communication, least of all the provision of a feasible solution.

I don't use a Vodacom mailbox nor intend to but I do require third-party Outgoing Email functionality whilst using Vodacom Internet Connectivity.

Could a suitable workable solution kindly be provide as soon as possible please!

Thank you.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for the time and effort taken to voice your dissatisfaction to our office. It is with the cooperation and feedback from valued clients such as yourself that we are able to identify any areas of improvement within our organisation.

Please note the security update is in line with industry best practice. The email provider should be responsible to provide an smtp that can be used with any connection. This was escalated to the Telkom team for further assistance. Below is some steps to take as a work around in the interim:

Steps to enable Gmail SMTP

1.           Make sure you have MFA or 2 Step Verification on your Gmail account (although the below steeps are for you email client to bypass that) https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en-GB

2.           Enable Mail password via Google APPs passwords feature https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords

a.           Chose Windows Computer for your Outlook client

3.           Save the password as it will be needed to access Gmail SMTP

4.           Go to your Gmail settings https://support.google.com/mail/answer/22370?hl=en and follow the steps to link your account

5.           Check this article https://support.google.com/a/answer/***?ctx=gmail&hl=en&authuser=0&visit_id=***&rd=1 for clarity on checking or unchecking “Treat as an alias”

a.           Treating as alias means your other email (***) messages will also go to Gmail

i.            Pro is that you have additional backup

ii.           Con is you’re filling up your free tier Gmail quota

b.           Unchecking means your other email messages will not be in Gmail inbox

c.           For both scenarios you will be able to send email as that other email address from Gmail and your email client like Outlook (which is our interest), after you follow remaining steps

6.           At the step that requires your SMTP just use smtp.gmail.com (instead of smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net or smtp.vodamail.co.za) using port 465 (SSL) option

a.           Use your Gmail account (***)  for SMTP username, and

b.           Password saved in step 3 above

7.           Please take note that Gmail will send you verification code your other email address (***)  , therefore you need to have access to it at the time of this exercise

8.           After Gmail accepts your settings you can go to your email client and change your Outgoing  server settings  with same info as in 6 above, including username and password

We apologize for the inconvenience and the service experienced.

Regards,

Vodacom Consumer Website Team

Best regards,

NH

The suggested workaround is a nappy swap for a soiled diper, disgusting!

Firstly and to be clear the email provider did provide a smtp that worked with any connection!

Regarding Vodacom's security update, adherence to alleged security industry 'best practice' for whatever that even means is completely useless if implementing it negates and in fact degrades functional service delivery to customers.

Vodacom deliberately has made it literally near impossible to channel outgoing email by not involving key stakeholders, (i.e. third-party ISP's, Telkom in this instance) in it's self-serving solutions deployment. It took this decision unilaterally without respect nor regard for impact to customers. If this action has ANY credibility in terms of adherence to what can only be described as the *******ed claim of so called security industry 'best practice' how is it then that the issue even exists?

The deplorable workaround suggested notwithstanding the shift of blame to third-party email providers is despicable. Not only that but Vodacom provides NO clarity as to by when proper functionality will be restored.

Having clearly not thought this through properly Vodacom should roll back the alleged security deployment until such time as a proper befitting customer centric operationally feasible solution becomes available! In the meaitme I will do my utpmost to ensure this debacle is brought to the attention of the email user community at large.
