Sales person ****

I was phoned by Vodacom sales to offer an add-on 2GB data bundle for R 129 to save on the prepaid data that I was purchasing every month.

It sounded like a good deal, so I said yes.

The lady then said I would also receive a free data modem and sim card. I got suspicious (they have tried this before) and ask several times to ensure that the 2GB data would be loaded to my phone's sim card, not the new sim card. The lady was emphatic that my existing sim would get the data, not the new one. I must have asked five times.

I asked for a call ref number and was told an SMS would arrive with that and the order details. No SMS came.

A week passes and I get phoned for delivery. Still suspicious, I fortunately did not open the modem or anything. I was invoiced for this yesterday - not R129, but rather R 155. No data appeared on my existing sim. I phoned Vodacom customer care, and they indicated that the data was loaded on the new sim card. After a lot of too-ing and fro-ing it turns out that of course, the data could not be loaded on the existing contract, and was always going to be loaded on the new sim. I'm guessing they try this trick with lots of people who then couldn't be bothered to cancel the contract. I have now started the process of trying to cancel this, but I'm furious about the deception, and the now the trouble I have to go to.

My complaints:

1) A blatant lie that the 2GB data was to be loaded on the existing sim.

2) A lie that the cost would be R129 p/m. They should advise that VAT will bring this to R155

3) No call ref number

My advice for people:

1) Don't assume that the sales person you are speaking to is informed enough, or ethical enough, to be truthful, even if they claim to represent a large organisation like Vodacom.

2) It is highly unlikely that Data bundle contracts can be 'bolted on' to existing contracts, for reasons that I find personally mystifying (in the UK this was never a problem). So don;t buy into offers that seem like this.

After this event, and as a result probably of this post, I was called by a Vodacom representative. An investigation was conducted. They listened to the recording of the original transaction and cofirmed over the phone to me that I had indeed been misled, and that the salesperson had been in the wrong. Apologies were made by Vodacom. Disciplinary measures against the salesperson were not possible because "the sales person no longer works here". I was "happy".
So, four months later...
... I notice my account is STILL being debited for this service. A service I cancelled and had the equipment returned to Vodacom by courier that they sent without ever having opened the package. A service they agreed had been sold to me with ill intent.
The best part is I have now tried to contact the customer service centre to once again try to stop this, and after having worked through the various voice prompts to speak to a human, I get "due to unforeseen circumstances, our call center is not available". I have heard this message so many times having tried ot contact them that I must wonder what kind of TELECOMS company can't run a call centre and can't administer their billing, complaints and general service properly.
My advice to anyone thinking to port to or buy a new contract with Vodacom, is simple. Don't.
