Prorata handset fee confusion
Took out a 24 month contract in June 2023. Vodacom delayed my upgrade and started the contract on 2 July 2023 billing me a prorata handset fee for July 2023. The have billed me monthly since. In July 2025 (month 25), they have now billed me the full handset fee again. I believe that this should have prorata as well to 2 July. Vodacom insists that this is for June however, it is very clear that is for July as i started a second contract at the same time and that was not delayed. That contract showed a prorata in June and a full handset fee in July. Be careful- Vodacom can charge you extra fees when it comes to prorata payments..

21 Jul 2025, 11:35I had call from their consultant last week who wanted to explain our vodacom contracts worked. Having explained that I was charged for 25 months, I was told that he would contavt billing to provide feedback.
He called me by mistake today..wanting to talk to someone else. When I told him who I was he checked the system and advised that the billing was correct according to their billing department....reading notes on the system. He said that the contract started in 2 or 3rd July 2023 and that this was the last month being July 2025. He also stated that this month's invoice was for June 2025 which I argued.
He is expecting to call me later today. Saying this, I went through every invoice from start of my contract and count 24 full months of payment as well as 1 prorata payment for the month I started. I believe the Consumer Protection now needs to be engaged on this matter as vodacom could be doing this to thousands of customers around the country.

22 Jul 2025, 06:04Whilst I appreciate the resolution of the matter, i have expressed concern that:
1. Vodacom had access to this information and yet insisted that the billing was correct
2. The consultants handling the matter, without exception, stated that the July invoice was billing for June until I asked for this breakdown.
3. These agreements are captured on a system which automatically handles the debit orders. Is this is system glitche or a human error? Either way, how many other customers are unknowingly being overcharged.
4. The responses have not appeared to get to root cause but appeared to accede to my complaint when I challenged the consultants. Vodacom did not acknowledge the mistake but rather said they would authorise a refund as I contested the billing.
5. I have in turn reported the matter to a consumer watchdog and will look to raise the matter with consumer protection. Whilst I will get a credit, how many other clients were unknowingl overbilled?
