Premature Cancellation Troubles- It is barely possible

So this is how they work - Make it impossible to cancel contract - Pillar to Post for everything

I just wanted to pay all that was due, even if I felt the about is not fair, I would pay so that I do not have to deal with them, its p a i n f u l

Their goals -- Make it very very difficult to cancel cell phone contracts. -- And keep you paying even after cancellation - even if you manage to cancel.

What happened to me- Last Year 1. Last year I tried to cancel contract was advised to take a better cheaper subscription - ultimately they were not so honest - ended up saving R50 when I was promised about 40% savings on monthly payment 2. And oh they do not tell you will will pay about 3 times your monthly subscription value in one month to do this convertion to this "better" plan.

What happened to me - This year My goal - cancel phone contract and pay what ever they require....WHATEVER THEY REQUIRE 1. First thing I tried to get a premature cancellation quote. Was taken pillar to post about not having the phone numbers that I want to cancel the contract for even when I know my ID number and all other details 2. Finally got the both cell phone numbers on my phone contracts. After been taken pillar to post - each department pointing to the next 3. Once I had the number I was told I cant be given a settlement quote because I did once last year. After insisting for long- was given just my invoice and not settlement quote and was almost forcefully advised to take a better subscription plan, I denied after what happened to me last year when I tried that. Her tone suggested that I would be in trouble if I got the quote and did not pay immediately. As if I had no right to determine my own finances. 4. I still insisted on the settlement quote and I was told point plank that I can be given a quote on certain during days during week(week days) and I should call on the 3 to request a quote. 5 - On the 3rd I called and had to lie to avoid the endless pillar to post and I was finally given settlement quotes with fewer trouble. 6 -I wanted to make the payment using the Capitec app, I wasted hours on this. I had to call them. Only to be told that there are 5 digit number I should put before my account number. I tried all kinds of combinations. Nothing worked. 7. I then called to get an account number I can call. I was told they do not give account numbers - I gave up - pillar to post again 8. Following day I went to the Vodacom store in Vosloorus. I made the amount on the both quotes in store. I was told they cant send the documents to cancelation department because I do not have my physical ID, soft copy is not acceptable - I thought they have all my details already. 9 - I asked the lady at the vodacom vosloorus store if there are any remaining payments I have to make outside the settlement amount -- She said NO - I veried this verbally multiple times 10 - Anyway I send the proof of payment, the cancelation form and soft ID copy myself as I could not be assisted in store 11 - I then called the cancellation department to verify that there is no additional payments I need to make - I was advised that there is actually more payments I need to make - my subscription that is coming at the end of feb/early march 12 - I went back to the store and told them I want to make this final payment and requested that the debit order on my bank card be cancelled. 13 - I made the final payment that was not included in the settlement amount and the lady at the vosloorus told me my debit orders were cancelled - I even told her my bank account will not be active from the 15th so she should make sure. She verified to me 14- As a result of my lack of trust - I called the customer service - I was told that the debit order was actually not cancelled but they are willing to help me. 15- So I went back to the store, the lady was now claiming that the debit order can only be cancelled after 3 days of making the settlement amount and final payments. She is the same one who told me the debit order was cancelled. She was not honest. 16 - So the same guy in point 15 from customer service had to go from pillar to post and ultimately told me I will receive an SMS after the cancellation was successful - I only had a reasonable customer exprience with this guy - hope he was telling the truth. 17. Problem is the Cancellation department told me they are not responsible for debit orders. 18 - Interesting to see the conflicting messaging from the physical store and people on the call

I just wanted to pay all that was due, even if I felt the about is not fair, I would pay so that I do not have to deal with them, its p a i n f u l

I will go back after 3 days to determine if I was told the truth.

I just want to verify that the debit order is cancelled.

I will post the results here on Hello Peter, google, on my personal website, 3 popular Facebook groups and LinkedIn.

Those who have the same trouble as me, if you are willing to put in the time.

Call the Ombudsman - this below should suffice
  • Repeated obstruction to cancellation
  • Contradictory information from Vodacom (store vs call centre vs cancellations)
  • Failure to provide settlement clarity
  • Misrepresentation of plan changes (last year)
  • Risk of unauthorized debit orders after settlement
  • You acted in good faith and attempted to pay everything

Just received an SMS to say my debit order has been cancelled.

I do not believe them, I will go the store to verify.

And then call the different departments to verify with all of them
