Phone got ******

My contract cell phone was ****** just to find out now that there was no insurance on the hand set. I was under the impression that these has got insurance because it does not belong to me yet. My question is how can a contract phone not have insurance on it, is it my responsibility to take one out as I was never made aware that I should have done so. Now I am sitting without a phone that I still need to pay for more than a year and a half. How can that be fair.
