Nightmare to cancel vodacom contract

What does it take to cancel a matured vodacom contract ? I been trying to cancel a vodacom contract for about two years now. One is not allowed to just walk into a vodacom store to cancel a contract. Your are provided with a service number to call but your request will never be processed. Why are service providers allowed to continue taking money on a Sim card you have not used for two years?
