Is Vodacom getting a cut of the ****??

I have been a loyal customer of Vodacom for years now – and recently encouraged my husband to move this service provider as well. Have I made a mistake? My chosen contract allows me R375 worth of airtime/date etc. a choice I made to control expenditure. To my horror – 3 February I discover I have a balance of “R0” NOTHING. On inquiring with Vodacom – I am informed that “back round” data was running and it used up the amount through airtime. Background data - I am advised was for a program OperaTele Com. The agent was then very quick to say – he will unsubscribe me and within seconds I have an sms: You have been unsubscribed from “AmpUP Mobile”?? Conflicting information? Why is it so easy for VODACOM to unsubscribe me from something – I NEVER SUBSCRIBED TO? This program / service consumed every cent of my contract. After requesting to be escalated to a senior person – VODACOM confirms they cannot take responsibility and I am to phone this/that number. I REFUSE to accept that. The only contract I have is with you VODACOM – a relationship I entered into in good faith. Clearly there is client abuse – that YOU are not controlling – as there are numerous complaint of abuse on this platform ALONE! Show me evidence that I authorized this: “subscription” or reimburse me! I will escalated this to the appropriate Ombudsman – clearly numerous customers are being ****med – and VODACOM is either not interested or IN ON IT

Dear Client

Please note that WASPS (Wireless Application Service Providers) like Opera Telekom(Content Provider) are third parties developing and offering services using the Vodacom network. The service that was subscribed to was called AmpUp Mobile.

They make use of Vodacom's cellular network infrastructure and billing relationship with the subscriber to deliver and bill for these services, such as SMS voting, Traffic reports, Games, Competition lines, banking transaction charges etc.

Customer’s accept and register to WASP services via SMS/calls at their own will and therefore it is the account holder’s responsibility to safeguard their handset as they will remain liable for charges incurred.

The Wireless Application Service Provider Association (WASPA) has been constituted to regulate all WASPs to ensure, inter alia, that they abide with the aforementioned provision.

Should you have any further queries, please contact WASPA via email at *** or call on ***(charged call).

I have also responded to you.

Kind regards

Vodacom Consumer Website Team

Reviewer Update

Good day Vodacom representative. Thank you for responding. It appears you have shifted all blame of this matter to - what I translate your insinuation to be - an "irresponsible account holder"...i.e. me.

I will state publicly for all who review this complaint the following; through whatever means this "subscription " was activated it was neither by choice nor was it's effect noticed as it clearly happened under the radar and at what ever subtle level remained so until now February 2017. I have been advised this 'subscription' was activated July 2016. For months then, it's effect went unnoticed - and I assumed (as most would no doubt) data usage was to blame.
For a second time I request that you Prove to me I accepted this subscription. In addition I request that you provide me with the evidence I was to use to identify that I had been?!

You have provided me with a contact number /email address of so-called-said 3rd party.
However, you cannot absolve yourselves from all responsibility - as you ultimately benefit from this relationship, since I then have had to purchase more data /airtime to make up for that which is taken from me! No - ****** from me.

I am insulted by the suggestion that I 'allowed this to happen'- no one allows abuse!
It would appear- in fact - that this is a calculated syndicate and a symbiotic one at that as you are reaping certain rewards as well.

In conclusion - your clients may just be overwhelmed by your charges to begin with - and that the occasional 'appearance of over spend here and there' is being mistaken as their own doing when in actual fact - there lies a beast in the guise of so called WASPS that is taking a few rands here and there - and making a fortune and the only consistent here is the medium through which they are doing so!

Their mistake came when they took too much too quick from me.

If a layperson like myself can see an increased trend of complaints in this regard... Why can't a power house like yourself!??

Buck up VODACOM! Protect your customers from this injustice! Instead of sitting back and reaping the benefits of increased data purchases by your none-the-wiser-clients... Acknowledge this is what it is - CLICK ***** - and act!
