Irritated Customer

Dear Vodacom Management and Customer Complaints Team,

I am writing to formally escalate my unresolved complaint regarding the additional data offer I accepted in late September, the unexpected increase in my monthly debit, and the unacceptable manner in which Vodacom has handled my dispute.

Quite frankly, I am appalled by the way this matter has been handled. As a loyal Vodacom customer, I find it absolutely unacceptable that I am being forced to repeatedly chase your team for feedback while my legitimate concerns are dismissed with the same response: that I agreed to the offer and should listen to the call recording.

Let me explain the situation clearly, because Vodacom appears to be focusing selectively on my verbal acceptance while conveniently overlooking the conversation that led to it.

In late September, I contacted Vodacom because I was constantly having to purchase additional data using my own money. I specifically requested assistance in finding a reasonably priced solution that would provide me with sufficient data without placing an unnecessary financial burden on me.

During that conversation, I asked the consultant a very specific and direct question: “Is this the total amount that will be debited from my account every month?” The consultant confirmed that it was. I made it clear that I did not want unexpected charges or surprises on my account.

I acknowledge that I have multiple numbers linked to my Vodacom contract. However, this is precisely why I sought clarification. I did not merely ask what the additional data would cost for the particular number being discussed. I specifically asked whether the amount quoted represented the total monthly debit across my account. The consultant confirmed that it did.

If the quoted amount applied only to the individual number being discussed, it was the consultant's responsibility to explain that distinction clearly and ensure that I understood the full financial implications before obtaining my consent.

I should not have to discover the actual cost of an offer only after receiving my invoice.

When I received my October invoice, I was confronted with a debit of approximately R1,700, whereas I understood from the conversation that my total monthly debit would be approximately R1,100. This is a difference of roughly R600, which is a significant and unexpected additional expense.

Had the consultant clearly explained that my total monthly debit would increase to approximately R1,700, I would not have accepted the offer. I specifically asked for confirmation of the total amount because I wanted to make an informed financial decision. I relied on the information provided to me by your representative.

MY COMPLAINT IS NOT THAT I NEVER AGREED TO THE OFFER. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT MY AGREEMENT WAS BASED ON THE INFORMATION AND CONFIRMATION PROVIDED BY YOUR CONSULTANT.

There is a fundamental difference between agreeing to an offer as it was explained to me and knowingly agreeing to a higher total monthly debit that was not clearly communicated.

Vodacom's continued insistence that I said “yes” does not resolve the issue. Of course I said yes to the offer as it was presented to me! What I am disputing is the basis on which that acceptance was obtained and whether the full cost was properly explained.

If Vodacom intends to rely on the call recording, then I expect the entire conversation to be reviewed fairly and in context. This must include my explicit question about the total monthly debit, the consultant's confirmation, and any explanation provided regarding the other numbers on my contract.

Listening only to the portion where I accepted the offer while disregarding the question I asked immediately beforehand and the answer I received is not a fair or complete assessment of my complaint. You cannot isolate my “yes” from the conversation that gave meaning to that “yes” and then use it as the sole justification for dismissing my dispute.

I expect Vodacom to provide a proper explanation of how my monthly charges increased from approximately R1,100 to R1,700, including an itemised breakdown of the charges for each number on my contract before and after the additional data offer was added.

Furthermore, I find the handling of this complaint extremely disappointing. I have had to repeatedly contact Vodacom myself to obtain feedback. At no point should a loyal customer have to continually chase a service provider for updates on a dispute that should be investigated and communicated transparently.

Why am I expected to spend my own time repeatedly following up on a matter that Vodacom should be proactively addressing? Why has there been so little accountability, communication and willingness to properly engage with the substance of my complaint?

Customer service is not simply about obtaining a customer's agreement to a product. It is about ensuring that customers understand what they are agreeing to, providing accurate information, and taking responsibility when a customer raises a legitimate concern.

I have been a loyal Vodacom customer, yet this experience has left me feeling misled, disregarded and thoroughly disrespected. Customer loyalty should count for something, but the manner in which this complaint has been handled suggests otherwise.

THE RESOLUTION I EXPECT FROM VODACOM

I am formally requesting the following:

1. A full and impartial review of the call recording. The complete conversation must be reviewed, not selectively interpreted. I expect the review to specifically address my question about the total monthly debit and the consultant's confirmation.

2. A detailed billing breakdown. Provide an itemised explanation of the charges for all numbers linked to my contract, showing how the monthly debit increased from approximately R1,100 to R1,700 following the addition of this offer.

3. A refund or appropriate credit. I want the disputed additional charges reviewed and refunded or credited appropriately in light of the information provided to me when the offer was sold.

4. Immediate cancellation of the additional data offer. I no longer wish to retain this add-on because I accepted it based on a monthly cost that I understood to be the total debit. I want it cancelled without an unfair cancellation penalty arising from this dispute.

5. Reinstatement of my previous package and billing arrangement. I want my account returned to the arrangement that existed before this additional offer was added, with written confirmation of the applicable monthly charges and confirmation that no unwanted add-on remains active.

6. A formal explanation for the handling of my complaint. I want an explanation for the lack of proactive communication and why I have had to repeatedly contact Vodacom for feedback.

7. A substantive written response. I do not want another generic response stating that I agreed to the offer. I expect a response that addresses each point raised in this email and explains how Vodacom intends to resolve the matter.

Let me make one thing abundantly clear: I am not prepared to accept a response that simply repeats that I agreed to the offer. I have explained what I asked, what I was told, what I understood I would pay, what I was subsequently charged, and why I am disputing the difference.

I expect Vodacom to take accountability for the way this offer was presented and to investigate the matter fairly. I should not be expected to bear the financial consequences of an offer I would not have accepted had its total cost been clearly explained to me.

Please treat this email as a formal escalation of my unresolved complaint. I request written acknowledgement and a substantive response within five business days. If Vodacom fails to resolve this matter satisfactorily, I will consider escalating it to the relevant telecommunications consumer complaints channels and regulatory bodies.

I have given Vodacom my business and loyalty. In return, I expect transparency, accountability and professional customer service. I do not believe these are unreasonable expectations.

I EXPECT A RESOLUTION, NOT EXCUSES. I EXPECT ACCOUNTABILITY, NOT A SELECTIVE INTERPRETATION OF A CALL RECORDING. AND I EXPECT MY COMPLAINT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

I trust that this matter will now receive the attention it deserves and that Vodacom will provide a fair resolution rather than continuing to dismiss my concerns.

Kindly respond in writing.

Regards,

A Very Disappointed Vodacom Customer
