I'm paying for a *****ulently obtained phone and contract
On 6th April 2023, someone, using a **** green ID book with my details, but their photograph, was able to open a new line rental on my Vodacom account and received an Apple iPhone 11. I received an invoice that was much higher than my usual amount and queried this, only to discover that this *****ulent transaction had taken place in Bloemfontein at Game stores. I was not in the country at the time. I went to the SA embassy to verify my identity and sent off all the documents to Vodacom’s ***** department. Nothing happened. Upon my return to South Africa, I went to a Vodacom store and submitted all documents including copies of the *****ulent contract and **** ID. I also made a police case and submitted that to Vodacom too. To date, I am still paying for this phone and line rental which was obtained *****ulently. I was told I cannot close my Vodacom account because I will be liable for the full cost of the phone. I must continue paying the account each month until the ***** case has been resolved and then, perhaps, I’d get my money back. I have emailed the ***** department several times and each time I receive a placatory, “We have escalated this matter and will inform you in due course.” Once the phone is paid off, Vodacom won’t care to investigate further. What recourse do I have?
