How can vodacom can't help me with changing a number

I took a vodacom cotract, now I get messages addressed to other people and some of them a really personal. Now when I ask them to change the number for me they say they can't help me without paying a certain amount. How do you pay for services that you are already paying for? They even telling me that I'm stuck with the number
