***** using your FICA, POPI Breached.

I had to transfer of my number from my fathers existing account to a new account in my name in May of this year.

The new account was opened by standard procedure, however the debit order section of the contract was left blank and unsigned. The intention being that the account would be settled by EFT.

FICA proof of address was provided by means of my Capitec bank statement.

EFT Payment had been made since may, the last being at the end of September.

On October 4th, i received the following from Vodacom ( ********** ): "Your Vodacom debit order for R 1078.35 was returned unpaid. Send code ARR to 31050 to receive available account payment options. For queries call ********** ."

Phoning the number provided resulted in me being told that my payment method had been changed to debit order as of October. This was done without my consent. Note that my September bill had been paid on September 28th by EFT, so the account had not been outstanding. No Vodacom personnel can confirm who processed the change or why it was done.

I returned to the outlet where i had signed the contract, where the rep and i came to the conclusion that the banking details used to load the debit order at Vodacom had been obtained from the Capitec bank statement i had originally provided as FICA. I had not provided Vodacom with any other from of Banking information other than this.

I have since had the debit order removed, but Vodacom has yet to confirm the who was responsible for using the bank statement to load the unauthorised debit order nor why this was done. Vodacom has also not as yet confirmed removal of my banking information form their systems, which i regard as being a breach of the Protection of Personal Information Act.
