Finding it impossible to cancel my contract

I had a 24 month contract with Vodacom which was meant to end in January 2017, however I was relocating overseas in August 2016 to study and got in contact with Vodacom to prematurely cancel my contract and pay whatever penalties were imposed.

I got the cancellation quote fairly quickly but this is when things became extremely disappointing. After forwarding the completed cancellation form, together with proof of payment (made during July 2016), I had to call Vodacom about 4 times a week to check what was happening with the process. Every time I spoke to a new consultant, it was as if we were starting off from scratch. Nobody could tell me why my cancellation was not being processed. This dragged on until mid August when I was assured that everything was cancelled.

Fast forward to September and I receive another invoice from Vodacom for the contract that was meant to be cancelled. I've since tried speaking to their online service agents and sent a mail to the customer service team without a response in 3 days. I now live in another country and have no way to physically go into a branch - not that this seems to help anyway.

I am extremely frustrated at this entire process and cannot believe how difficult Vodacom are making this. You would think that for a company of this size, they would have a fairly efficient cancellations process. Instead, I get the overwhelming sense of ambivalence over leaving customers and perhaps worse, a strong lack of incompetence in handling this. I hope that by bringing greater attention to this on a platform like hellopeter, someone from Vodacom will take note and contact me and that future customers of Vodacom can benefit from the terrible experience that I have had with them.

Amazingly, my account was debited again this month for a contract that I have been told on three different occasions has been cancelled. When combining all of the 'cancellation' payments and the monthly debit orders, I would have been better off just letting the contract lapse and paying the regular instalments. I cannot understand how Vodacom's service can be this bad.

Furthermore, the September debit order was over R900 when my actual contractual amount is just under R600. I haven't had the SIM card in a phone for over two months. This overcharging is completely inexplicable.

At this point I am considering whether it is time to bring this to the attention of the relevant consumer protection authorities?
