Disgusted by Vodacom Insurance — Tired of Being Taken for a Ride

After my phone was ****** on 27 June 2025, I approached Vodacom to process my insurance claim, only to be hit with shocking hidden costs. I was expected to pay R6,837 in excess and a R4,600 betterment fee, totalling over R11,000, just to replace my ****** device.

To make matters worse, my insured phone, the iPhone 15 Pro, is conveniently "out of production," leaving me with no choice but to either downgrade or fork out a fortune to "upgrade" to an iPhone 16 Pro — something I never planned to do. This feels like a classic marketing trick disguised as an insurance process, and frankly, I’m tired of being taken for a ride.

The Consumer Protection Act exists to prevent exactly this kind of behaviour — unfair contracts, hidden conditions, and tactics that corner consumers into spending more after a traumatic experience like theft.

This is now my third complaint in under two months. I still have no clarity about a promised voucher from a previous issue. Worse, I was signed up for a program I never agreed to, thanks to yet another Vodacom marketing call that completely disregarded my consent.

To be fair, the employees at the store have been helpful, but the processes are a disaster. No proper handovers, confusing information, and even small things like my SIM card being forgotten after finally getting the new phone — it all adds up to a company that simply doesn’t care.

And as if all of this wasn’t enough, I was forced into a new 24-month contract for this device — something I never wanted. My intention was simple: keep my contract as it was, pay the expected excess, and hold onto my upgrade eligibility for the iPhone 17 when it releases. Instead, Vodacom has tied me up for two more years and made me pay an outrageous amount to replace a ****** phone.

I don’t want empty phone calls from Vodacom anymore. I want written answers, accountability, and for Vodacom to stop playing games with its paying customers.

Sort this out, Vodacom. This behaviour is unacceptable.
