Recently I have been made aware of charges called content services. I went to Vodacom in Hillcrest, Durban yesterday to be told that when you have an advert (this was the consultants terminology, I am going to refer to it as content), on the screen, some have a cross on the top right of this content which you need to press to exit the content. If you do not exit this content by pressing on this cross (from what I understand similar to the "skip ad" on You Tube) then it is presumed you are allowing this content to be loaded/used (not sure of the terminology to use?) on your device and thereafter you are then charged for this under "content services". The consultant said he would show me an example but when he tried on his phone he could find an example to illustrate. When I challenged the MOA of these charges he basically said it was the subscribers responsibility to monitor these. When I asked if Vodacom can block these he said he was not possible as then all you internet and whatsapp will be blocked. When I asked if I could monitor and delete these from my profile I was told that I could, but would have to come into Vodacom on a regular basis and ask them to look into my account and then on my request they will be removed. This is obviously not practical and between visits there is nothing preventing me from being charged. When I asked why I cannot do it from the Vodacom app or from the web page , via my account- I was told this was not possible. The consultant also referred to these as ****s - when I pressured him later he backtracked and denied he said they were a **** but that the MOA was sneaky. I then challenged him why I was paying Vodoacom for these? This to me is a massive grey area--how is Vodacom involved in these transactions - I never signed up for payments to third party charges via Vodacom. It is obvious that there is an agreement between Vodacom and whoever Vodacom pay for this "content services" (do I call them service providers?). With the amount of money being paid, Vodacom do not pay this to these 'service providers' for free.(how is this even allowed?) There is obviously financial benefits for Vodacom with these charges. My visit to Vodacom was frustrating to say the least - the consultant was condenscending - he made me feel like this was all my fault , was waving his finger and me and then challenged me as to why these were signed up for ages ago (2015/2016) and I had only responded now....the unfairness of this plus stubborn push back from the consultant made for a heated exchange as I cannot see how any of this is fair on the consumer - what happened to the CPA on these charges - surely this cannot be seen as fair or just and there has to be some protection for the consumer - how many other customers of Vodacom, in their ignorance, are being charged for these "content services". How can this MOA be legal? I cannot see how this has not landed up in the courts? (To round off the frustrating day the charges have been sent to me on the wrong account - the consultant had it showing on my tablet account, I am sent my accounts via e-mail and these charges are reflecting on ac ell phone account).
