Content Charges

I have a query with regard to content charges that I started incurring on my Vodacom data package which I have had for a long period. My invoices for May and June 2017 were much higher than the usual R280pm I was billed for.

When a went to Vodacom to find out about this they advised me that it was due to content charges and gave me details of the providers which they also advised they had then cancelled. What I found strange was that the Vodacom assistant advised me that this is quite common as the fact is that if someone has your cellular number they can just use it for these content charges even on their own devices and without my permission. I am unclear and feel that that is not right due to the fact that if I don’t agree or sign up for something how can I be debited.

Vodacom then advised me to contact WASPA which was the independent complaints company for this. I was advised that the providers were removed but only one provider was will to refund a portion which I still have not received.

In July, I received my next statement which indicated another amount for content charges. I cannot explain this. Vodacom seem to feel that they are not responsible for this. I have last week also upgraded my contract but I am not sure or confident that the charges will continue or stop. The Sim card I have is only used in my IPad and not in a cellular device and I use it more for just emails. I dont make calls. How can it be legal that you are charged for content charges when you dont agree in any manner to pay these charges.
