Complaint Regarding Poor Service at Vodacom Pan Africa Mall Alexandra branch

Complaint Regarding Poor Service at Vodacom Pan Africa Mall Branch

Dear Vodacom Customer Service Team,

I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding the poor and rude customer service I experienced at your Pan Africa Mall branch in Alexandra on 14 April.

On that day, I visited the branch to perform a SIM swap after losing my phone. I had all the necessary documents required for the process. I was initially assisted by a staff member named Tebogo, who informed me that I needed to provide five contact numbers that I frequently called using my lost number. I explained to him that I had just lost my phone and asked if there was an alternative way to retrieve this information. Rather than assisting me, Tebogo rudely pointed to other customers behind me and suggested I ask them how they managed to recall their five numbers after also losing their phones.

Already feeling emotional and overwhelmed from losing my device, I found his response highly insensitive and dismissive. Tebogo instructed me to look for the numbers while he assisted other customers, without offering any meaningful help. I sat down to try and retrieve the information using my other device. When I approached him again and tried reading out the numbers, he rudely interrupted, telling me I was wasting his time and should have written them down — only then did he hand me a pen and paper.

After providing the numbers, Tebogo directed me to another staff member, Unathi, who I later discovered was the manager. Unathi greeted me in an unprofessional and rude manner, asking, "What do you want?" When I explained that Tebogo had sent me to her for assistance, she dismissively stated she was busy, leaving me to sit and wait once again.

Eventually, Tebogo informed me that the numbers I had provided were incorrect and suggested I bring the original packaging of my phone as an alternative form of verification. Feeling humiliated and unwelcome, I decided to leave the store without completing the SIM swap.

Upon returning home and discussing the situation with my mother, she offered to accompany me back to the branch the next day. However, given the distressing experience, I first tried to purchase a new SIM card and complete the swap myself through self-service, but this failed. Reluctantly, we returned to the branch.

When we arrived, my mother asked to speak to the manager. Unathi appeared, and we explained the entire situation. Rather than taking accountability, both Unathi and Tebogo defended their actions and further humiliated me by comparing me to other, older customers who supposedly managed to recall their contact numbers. Their dismissive and degrading behavior was deeply hurtful.

Unathi even made a derogatory comment suggesting that if I struggled under such "pressure," I would not go far in life — an entirely inappropriate and unprofessional remark. The situation escalated to the point where they called security and instructed us to leave the store, without resolving my issue.

Later that day, I went to the Vodacom branch at Sandton City, where I received excellent service. The staff there assisted me professionally and efficiently, and I completed my SIM swap without issue. I mentioned my poor experience at the Pan Africa Mall branch, and was informed that I was not the first customer to complain about that store.

As a loyal Vodacom customer for over 10 years, I am deeply disappointed and disturbed by the stark difference in service between your township and suburban branches. Why must customers in townships accept poor, disrespectful service, while customers in suburbs are treated with dignity and professionalism?

It is clear that the staff at Pan Africa Mall are either not properly trained or do not respect their roles. They display unprofessional behavior even towards elderly customers, engage in loud personal conversations while customers are present, and show clear reluctance to assist.

I request a formal response regarding:

What action will be taken against the staff involved?

What steps Vodacom is taking to ensure all customers receive equal, respectful service across all branches, particularly in township areas.

Whether staff at township branches receive the same level of training and supervision as those in suburban branches.

I am not willing to let this matter go unresolved. I am also raising this complaint because I know many others feel similarly but do not have the means or confidence to speak up.

I look forward to your urgent response and the steps you will take to address this unacceptable treatment.
