Can't cancel contract because Vodacom is *****ing over its customers and want to trap them into staying in ontracts
I have a data contract with Vodacom that ends on 14 January 2020. After calling them midway through December as a calendar month notice to cancel the contract, I was promptly told by the agent that I could not cancel them and needed to phone back on 31 December to cancel. I asked her why this was the case and why my cancellation request could not be processed now and she said the system will not allow them to process it at that point. Apart from the inconvenience of it all for the customer, I left it and sougnt to cancel at the end of the month.
I missed the 31st due to personal commitments, but did managed to call back early in January 2020. Of course now nobody picks up the phone supposed because of high call volumes. I was on the line for more than 17 minutes and nobody picked up. I walked into the Vodacom data branch in Claremont on Sunday morning past (5 January 2020) and I asked for assistance from the sales person to cancel the contract. He tried calling on my behalf and couldn't get through. It said they were still experiencing high call volumes, on a SUNDAY!!!! The agent in the store even indicated that contract cancellations were taken away from store staff because apparently they "cancel contracts to easily". And all the while the customers suffers. Unacceptable!!
For me this just smacks of Vodacom wanting to keep customers in contracts they don't want, making them pay and not allowing them to cancel. I'm not wasting any more or my money trying to phone in to cancel this contract. I am going to report to the Telecommunications Authority and the Public Protector to have this matter investigated. If I get no favourable feedback that the contract is cancelled, I will take this matter further.
