Cancellation

My contract expried at a time I was in arrears. I asked them to cancel the contract, as it had already expired. I was then told they cannot do so, as I first need to pay all outstanding fees. So I was billed for nearly a year for data and calls I was never even able to use. Now I have a letter of final demand for these fees. How can you expect e to pay for something I couldn't even use? I heard from others how MTN and other cellphone companies would cancel the contract after expiration, even if you were in arrears, but Vodacom loves to keep charging you for things you can't even use. Why must I pay if I didn't get to use a second of the data or talk time?
