Blacklisting
I don't have a complaint but want to share my experience with blacklisting a handset. I borrowed someone a spare handset. After months I could not get it back and decide to get it blacklisted. I got confirmation from Vodacom that the handset and the SIM card is blacklisted. I requested that they must only blacklist and block the handset, the SIM card does not belong to me. They confirmed that they now only blacklisted the handset. I thought ok the person cannot use the handset anymore. To my surprise I found out that the handset is still in use. It seems like blacklisting is only an entry of the IMEI number in a database. The handset cannot be pawned at a honest pawn shop because they check the IMEI number, and that is about it. Anyone can put a SIM card in it and use it.
When you loose your phone with SIM card in it, only the SIM card get blocked.
I would like to hear from other readers if they had similar experience or can explain what it really mean if you blacklist a handset.
As per our conversation I can confirm that the handset you reported to be blacklisted is still blacklisted on our network.
The problem is that someone must have changed the phone's IMEI number. This means the same device reflects a new IMEI number on the network, which prevents the network from realising that the device is one which is blacklisted.
Kind regards
