On 17 Jan 18, I received a message from a suspicious number confirming that Vodacom received my port request. Shortly after that SMS, another came through that the porting had failed and to call my service provider. I planned to do this as soon as I got home. But as I got home, I got another message from a number identified as “Vodacom SMS” that my number was successfully ported to MTN and I should call a certain number if I didn’t request for it. I called the number and after I gave the number for which I had a query for to the respondent hung up as something did not feel okay. I then called 111 where eventually the lady on the was able to confirm that no port was done and confirmed that since I am on contract, it would have not been possible. But she couldn’t help me with where to report this supposed phishing ****. I feel that it is important that Vodacom is aware of attempted schemes in their name so as to see how these people get their client details. But of course, no one knows anything at Vodacom.
