Account handed over to lawyers

I have been with Vodacom for almost 10 years and have consistently paid my account. If there was a problem they would call me and I would rectify. I recently cancelled my account with them and missed the last debit. They have handed over my account to debt collectors without even contacting me. I am so shocked at the treatment I am getting now that I don't have an account with them anymore.
