The Schrödinger's cat of insurance claims
Date and time of accident - 20/12/2020 08:45 (a Sunday) Vehicle towed 20/12/2020 11:00 Date and time claim registered - 21/12/2020 13:08 (a Monday). Claim number registered by Valentino (***/1). I was assured that I would be contacted by Lezanne Swartskop (LS) regarding outcome of the assessment by latest 23/12/2020. No further communication was received by Virseker across any platforms. I contacted Virseker on 23/11/2020 at 12:06 in order to find out the status of my claim. I was then informed that the claim had been withdrawn as the excess was too high. As this was news to me I expressed my displeasure and was informed that the claim would be reopened and LS would contact me that same day. Her line was engaged at the time of this dialogue with a different person. An assessor would be sent out in the interim. At this stage my vehicle had been at Auction Nation for 4 days with no further movement in terms of the claim. At 15:30 23/12/2020 I received a SMS from Virseker to send accident photos via whatsapp to LS. As the vehicle was in a different city from my person this was not possible from a geographical perspective; furthermore, as the damage was under the car, this was also not possible from an acrobatic perspective. I stated this to the whatsapp number provided. It is uncertain whether or not this number is monitored due to continuing radio silence. It is reminiscent of the phonecalls to Dr Manhattan on Mars that go unanswered. On 24/12/2020 08:52 I again called Virseker and was informed that I had not sent any accident photos. I again explained why this was not possible; yet another Twilight Zone conversation happened and LS's line was again engaged (or perhaps off the hook...?). It is now day 5 post-accident and the festive season is now upon us; there is no car or insurance claim in Santa's bag for me this year. Being a doctor who actually works over Christmas I require a car to get to and from the hospital; it is not very convenient to use Bolt and the goodwill of my colleagues for transport. Thank you COVID and Virseker for ensuring that SA's healthcare workers are appreciated and safe.
