Based on recent customer reviews, Unity Health draws strong criticism for the clinician-managed care model introduced in July 2026, which members say forces a nurse call centre consultation before any GP authorisation is granted. Complaints centre on long call waiting times, authorisation codes, rejected claims, debit order and premium suspension errors, unanswered emails, promised callbacks that never come, and scripts pharmacies will not honour. Positive feedback exists, praising named agents such as Sibusiso and Olwethu, smooth claim processing, emergency assistance, and the convenience of online doctor consultations.

Unexpected Medical Account After Authorisation Call
I am extremely disappointed with the service I received regarding my daughter. On the day my daughter was admitted to Die Wilgers Hospital, I contacted Unity Health to confirm cover. I spoke to a consultant who assured me that everything was in order. Based on this information, I proceeded with the treatment and paid R300, understanding that the medical aid would cover the remaining costs. To my surprise, I later received notifications stating that I still owe R801.55. This was never explained to me during my call. Had I been informed that there would be an outstanding amount that the medical aid would not cover, I would have made alternative arrangements or sought further clarification before proceeding. My main concern is not only the outstanding account but the lack of clear communication. Members should be provided with accurate and complete information when they contact the medical aid for assistance. I believe the financial implications should have been explained upfront so that I could make an informed decision. I have raised my concern directly but have not received a satisfactory resolution. I therefore request that Unity Health review this matter, clarify why I was not informed of the additional liability when I called, and provide a fair resolution. I hope this complaint will be taken seriously and addressed promptly. This situation has caused unnecessary stress and financial burden due to inadequate communication.

Unity Health’s Clinician Model – Misleading Rollout
We have been with Unity Health (Elixi) for two years and, until now, have had no issues with their service overall. Yesterday, they sent an SMS presenting their new clinician‑managed care model as an option. However, when I called today for an auth number to see a GP, I was told it is in fact a requirement: you must first phone the nurse call centre, explain your symptoms, and only if the clinician decides you are “sick enough” will you be referred to a doctor. This process is incredibly frustrating. Receiving a basic Schedule 2 pharmacy script instead of consulting directly with a GP undermines the very purpose of having a family doctor and the unlimited GP consultations we pay for. Just in closing I was on the line for just over an hour trying to speak to a clinician as they had an influx of calls suddenly overloading the system. If was Unity Health I would have rolled this out in phases, not just BOOM there you go. The "think tank" did not do their research on how upsetting this would be on all accounts. SMS Unity Health: Feeling unwell? Call *** FREE to speak to a qualified clinician for medical advice, treatment guidance, prescriptions where appropriate, and referral to a GP if needed. Sick notes may be issued at the clinician's discretion. Auth FSP 10287.

Unity Health has become useless when you actually need them
Unity Health has become useless when you actually need them I have been with Unity Health for 2 years and was happy with them until the changes introduced in July 2026. On 4 August, my daughter became very sick with tonsillitis and bronchitis. She had to miss school, and I had to miss work to look after her. I called Unity Health for authorisation, only to be told I first had to speak to their online doctor. I asked for a supervisor but nobody was willing to assist me, so I eventually had no choice because my child was sick. After explaining her symptoms, I waited about 20 minutes for them to consult their doctor, who then confirmed that she had tonsillitis based purely on the symptoms I had provided. They sent me a prescription and told me to find a pharmacy. I went to Dis-Chem, only to be told they didn’t recognise the prescription and I had to call Unity Health again using my own airtime. Most of the medication wasn’t available anyway. I then drove to a second pharmacy — same problem. I tried a third pharmacy and still couldn’t get the medication. I eventually gave up. Today is 9 August and my daughter is still sick. So now I am expected to start the entire process again, use my own airtime to call them, go through another online consultation and drive around looking for medication? This is completely unacceptable. Healthcare should make it easier for a sick child to get treatment, not create more stress, costs and delays for parents. I am now actively looking for alternative medical aid/insurance. Take Unity Health at your own risk. Make sure you have enough airtime and petrol, because you are going to need both

VERY DISAPPOINTED AT UNITY HEALTH
Since I joined in 2021. My experience has gotten worse by the years. Fist they made it almost impossible to get a authorization code. And kow you are force to consult online. I did a consultation now online and I am sure the doctor won't see anything wrong and they will prescribe something useless again as they usually do. If anyone knows of a better insurance plan refer me. I can see they dont even bother to respect to enquiries. At tjis stage they are driving us to our deaths. It is stupid really appreciate d a total waste of money.

I have been a client I'm sure for over 5 years. I hate this new process that you guys have come up with of consulting online. Why am I being forced to see a Dr online. Why can't I just get an authorization for my gp visits. Why is it such a hassle. Where
