I have found that the closer one gets to the end of a month the less units one gets, I bought two R100 vouchers one gave me 66 units the other 44 units. about a week or so later I bought another two R100 vouchers which gave me only 41.5 units. how can one get less units for the same amount of money. Also why do we pay on average R2.17 per unit Eskom rates are far less. Please could someone explain this to me.

Thank you for your message. The reason why you get less units when you buy for the same amount is due to a system called step tariffs or inclining block tariffs. These are set by your muncipality and it means basically that the more electricity you buy in the month, the more you will pay for it. How it works is, in the beginning of the month, the muncipality classifies electricity into different groups that are blocked in terms of units used, eg block 1 would be from units 0 - 150, block 2 from 151 - 300 etc. In the beginning of the month, you start off in block 1, but as you keep buying electricity you climb into higher block levels and these levels keep increasing in values of the units. By the end of the month, you could be in Block 4 which is charged at higher rates then in block 2 . You can log onto your municpality websites and it will give an explantion of what the muncicipality charges and how the step tariff works.
