The absolute worst service non-provider imaginable, bar none

Almost every second time that I try to load a voucher via USSD it doesn't go through. This has been the case for the past two years. Last night this happened again, and the household was left without power for the night. Previously I have tried using the EFT and email method but stopped this about 18 months ago after it transpired that you need to phone the customer care line, wait on hold for half of your day, and then convince someone on the other end of the line to try to help you. I gave up on this because it proved to be such a hassle that I forfeited R200 just because it wasn't worth a fifth follow-up. Various questions arise that I would appreciate answers to. Why is the service not available literally half the time that I try to use it? Why has no one realised that the system is broken and reconceived it? Why can one not buy through a sensible, commonly available channel like the prepaid services that banks offer online? And, lastly, which other service provider could you recommend? My only requirement is that the service must work more than half of the time. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Richard

Thank you for your mail. Unfortunately our USSD is reliant on the mobile networks and we are looking into the downtime issue. What I can suggest you use, is you log onto www.prepaid24.co.za which is an EFT portal where you can purchase your electricity tokens from and I think you would find alot easier

Yeah, after this happening late at night more than a dozen times, over more than two years, you've surely been "looking into" it for long enough and I don't think I'll be hanging around for much longer. Still eagerly awaiting your suggestions of a reliable service provider.

If only your tokens arrived with the same speed as your replies on HP.

I can understand your frustrations, but I am sure that you have noticed in the media that MTN has been having alot of issues with their sms and USSD portals and they are also trying to resolve their issues. I have mentioned in my previous response to try using WWW.PREPAID24.CO.ZA and I believe that you will find this alot better

Thanks so much! Your excuse is sufficient, if we ignore the fact that this has been happening for over (at least) two years through MTN, Cell C and Vodacom. If it doesn't work (which it doesn't), stop using it and direct all customers to another method. Simple. That would have saved me - and, by the looks of your HP reviews, hundreds of others - countless fruitless hours driving to shops in the middle of the night simply to have it revealed to you upon your return that your night and foreseeable future will be spent in the dark because the service is unavailable. If a product has this rate of failure, take it off the market.
