Unexplained Fare Increases & Discrepancies on Uber Rides
I am extremely concerned about the recent and unexplained increase in Uber ride fares, as well as significant discrepancies between what I’m charged and what drivers are seeing on their side.
In May and June, I regularly took Uber rides from Cosmo City to Chartwell, with fares ranging from R68 to R75. However, less than a month later—with no change in distance, time of day, or demand—I was charged R89 for the same route. The driver confirmed his app showed the fare as R65, meaning I was overcharged by approximately R24 (nearly 40%).
On the same day (Saturday, 19 July), I also took a ride from Sunninghill to Melrose Arch, which I was billed R96.22 for—yet the driver confirmed his app showed R58. That’s a staggering R38 difference, again nearly 40% higher than expected.
Additionally, trips I frequently take from Cosmo City to Uranium Street have increased from R70 in May to R92 in June, despite being taken around the same time of day and under similar conditions.
I’ve attempted to contact Uber via every possible channel, but there is currently no working customer support in South Africa—no valid phone number, no in-app option for general queries, and no public email address. This lack of access is unacceptable for a company of Uber’s size.
As a loyal customer, I am requesting: • A detailed explanation for these fare increases and discrepancies. • A review of the affected trip charges. • Reimbur*****t or account credit for any proven overcharges.
Please contact me via the email address or mobile number linked to my Uber account — I am happy to verify privately if needed.
I expect a response and resolution within a reasonable timeframe.
Kind regards,
