Uber - no 3rd party insurance!

An uber driver smashed into us writing off our classic vw beetle- the owner claims to not have 3rd party insurance and we didn't have insurance at the time. How on earth can Uber drivers not have 3rd party insurance - oh and Goodluck finding a contact number for Uber that is operational!
