Uber Greed
My wife and I and another couple took an Uber on 9th December 2017 from the northern suburbs to Cape Town stadium to watch the Cape Town 7's rugby. Excellent trip, driver and vehicle and it cost us R285.00. The same cost that we have previously been charged for the same trip, to and from the stadium/waterfornt. However, the shock came when the the event finished the eveing just after 20H00 and I request an Uber and the cost had now escalated to over R600.00. This is crazy and in my opinion a dirty **** by Uber, because they charge the normal rate to get you to the venue and think that you don't have a choice and have to use them to get home again and therefore up their prices by more than double. WHY??? The excuse they give is absolutely ****, the drivers use the same vehicles, drive the same distance, so what is different??? We eventually took a meter taxi and it cost us less than R400.00. Interestingly the driver told us that Uber normally increase there rates when there are big events and the meter taxis are then in huge demand, because people don't want to use Uber. They are abusing their loyal customers to make a quick buck. I have always been a big fan of the Uber concept and frequently use them, however, this was the first time I felt I was being abused and ********** by Uber and am now seriously considering to stop using them. Two friends of mine who experienced exactly the same, also at the 7's on Saturday, actually deleted their Uber apps yesterday. Is Uber too greedy and are they really better than the meter taxis? Yes, they are cheaper, but not by a huge margin; yes, they are mostly more reliable and the app feature does make a difference; no, the vehicles are not always cleaner and the drivers are not alsways better, especially not compared to decent meter taxi companies, such as Sport; and finally, yes, I think Uber manipulates clients by getting them to large events at a normal rate and then asking them to pay more than double for the same trip back, that is greedy. Uber, you have just lost another client because of your greed and will probably lose more if you carry on with this concept.
