Uber charged me twice for a cash trip – unfair and possibly *******
I had an Uber trip that was originally R237. The driver demanded R323, and my workers paid him R300 in cash. Uber later corrected the fare back to R237, meaning I was due a R63 refund.
Instead, the driver falsely marked the trip as unpaid. Even though the app shows the cash payment was made, Uber charged my account another R237. A refund was shown as “initiated” but it never came through, and a month later Uber debited my account anyway.
So I paid R300 cash and another R237 electronically – R537 for a R237 trip.
To make matters worse, I recently cancelled a ride because the driver was still dropping off another passenger and wasn’t on his way to me, and Uber still charged a cancellation fee.
This appears to be an unfair business practice and possibly a violation of the Consumer Protection Act. Customers should not be charged for services already paid for or be denied legitimate refunds.
I expect a full refund of the R237 and cancellation fee, and a proper investigation into this driver and Uber’s dispute process. If this is not resolved, I will escalate to my bank, the National Consumer Commission, and the relevant consumer ombudsman.
From my observation of Uber in the past few years they rely on:
Drivers logging cash rides as unpaid
Customers being too tired to fight
Small amounts adding up across millions of users.
Just my opinion, i'd like to hear other peoples perspective and if anyone else has experienced this problem.
