Rip-Off Service
I booked an Uber ride today, the 31st of August 2026, from my workplace—which is 2.4 km away from my house—just as I routinely do without any prior payment issues.
The driver arrived and we took the exact same route I always take. He drove very slowly the entire way, and I noticed his fuel warning light was flashing on reserve, so it was clear he was trying to save fuel. We left my workplace at 17:50 and arrived at my house at 17:58.
Because of a discount on my app, my fare was shown as R17.00, while his app showed R29.00. We realized the discrepancy, and although he closed the trip on his side, it remained active on both apps. We waited about 10 minutes, but it still wouldn't close, so he eventually drove off because he had another trip.
Fifteen minutes later, Uber charged me R42.00, and when I disputed it, I was told it was because the trip allegedly took longer than expected. That is completely unacceptable—a single minute or a driver's slow pace should not cause the fare to jump from R17.00 to R42.00. That is a direct rip-off.
I had no stops, I was exhausted from work, and I just needed to get home to rest. I expect this fare to be corrected and immediately adjusted to the original quoted amount of R17.00.
